VISUAL-SPATIAL SKILLS

One of the feminist movement’s biggest victories has been dispelling the stereotype that boys are better than girls in math and science. While the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields—the concept was introduced by the National Science Foundation in the 1990s—are still male-dominated, girls are steadily catching up. However, boys’ visual-spatial skills do develop ahead of girls’. For example, boys are especially good at mental rotation, which is the ability to imagine what an object looks like from any angle. This skill comes in handy when building a LEGO® model, or gauging the trajectory of a baseball while standing at home plate. Boys are also better at discriminating between the shapes of different objects and detecting visual patterns. However, the opportunities to apply these skills in early elementary school are limited. Math at this stage requires some visualization (carrying numbers, lining up digits to compute) but is also very linear (reading an equation from left to right).
